Apply the tape, stretch the film and warm it with a hairdryer for a clear, taut finish. The film traps a layer of air over the glass as a simple, temporary form of secondary glazing, and peels off in spring — a renter-friendly option where replacing windows isn’t possible.

The Energy Saving Trust describes secondary glazing film as a cheaper DIY option that “offers the least thermal benefits” of the secondary glazing types, doesn’t last long and can be hard to make look neat. It doesn’t publish a saving for film. Its figure of around £85 a year is for installing A-rated double glazing throughout a fully single-glazed semi-detached home, and doesn’t apply to this kit. We couldn’t find reliable independent evidence for a yearly saving from window film, so we don’t claim one.
Figures are for Great Britain unless stated. We cite this guidance independently — these organisations haven’t tested, approved or endorsed this product or our shop.
